About Marianne
Hi, I’m Marianne Linton. I am a New Zealand painter based in Lower Hutt, New Zealand. I love to paint with watercolour mainly but I also paint with oil, acrylics and pastels.
As long as I can remember I have loved to paint and draw. More than thirty years ago I started painting in oils, moved to acrylics and found my love of watercolour.
I love painting with watercolour as it makes me work fast and intuitively, producing effects that don’t happen with other media. The colours glow. While I control the paint to a degree, we work in tandem and it does its own thing, generating unexpected magic. Sometimes I think my best skill is in managing a potential disaster on paper! The technical challenges appeal to my left brain and the magical aspects to my right.
I enjoy painting a wide range of subjects, from landscapes, people and still life, although often my paintings represent my love of animals and the natural environment.
Evaluating my life during COVID and a long recovery from a serious ankle injury with surgery led me to change the direction of my life and I decided to focus full-time on my art.
My current painting goals are to paint every day and paint from life or ‘plein air’ as much as possible. I like to get outside and capture the essence, light and mood of the scene. I always use artist-quality materials and welcome commissions.
I have had many exhibitions and won the judge’s choice prize at the 2016 Class Act exhibition and a Merit prize at the 2018 SPLASH Watercolour exhibition. I had a solo exhibition at Fareham Gallery in 2022 and in 2023 participated in Solo 51 at the Academy Galleries.
My work is held in private collections in New Zealand and overseas. I regularly exhibit at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and Watercolour New Zealand’s SPLASH exhibition.
I work on commissions, so contact me using the form below if you have a favourite subject you would like me to paint.
